Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an increase pressure in the eyes. It is one of the main causes of blindness in dogs. Even after blindness, the quality of life is poor, not due to the blindness but to the severe pain. There are ways to prevent blindness and the severe pain caused by glaucoma. The key is catching the disease early!
Proactive Preventative Health Care is Available.
Glaucoma screening should be considered in all dogs and cats. We now have a state-of-the-art screening tool that makes testing easy and affordable. There are 42 breeds of dogs (3 breeds of cats) that are classified as predisposed to glaucoma. Mixes of these breeds are also at risk. For these breeds it is important to establish early baseline levels and monitor yearly. Pets with a history of glaucoma in the bloodline should be tested more frequently.
